The Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science (CLADS), Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), had been conducting the Nuclear Energy Science & Technology and Human Resource Development Project (hereafter referred to "the Project") in FY2020. The Project aims to contribute to solving problems in the nuclear energy field represented by the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F), Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (TEPCO). For this purpose, intelligence was collected from all over the world, and basic research and human resource development were promoted by closely integrating/collaborating knowledge and experiences in various fields beyond the barrier of conventional organizations and research fields. The sponsor of the Project was moved from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to JAEA since the newly adopted proposals in FY2018. On this occasion, JAEA constructed a new research system where JAEA-academia collaboration is reinforced and medium-to-long term research/development and human resource development contributing to the decommissioning are stably and consecutively implemented. Among the adopted proposals in FY2018, this report summarizes the research results of the "Quantitative analysis of radioactivity distribution by imaging of high radiation field environment using gamma-ray imaging spectroscopy" conducted from FY2018 to FY2021 (this contract was extended to FY2021). Since the final year of this proposal was FY2021, the results for four fiscal years were summarized. In this study, ETCC, a gamma-ray imaging system, was modified to be a portable device that can be used in 1F decommissioning project and can operate in high-dose environments. ETCC is the world's first gamma-ray camera capable of complete bijective imaging, the same as an optical camera. Therefore, ETCC can make general quantitative image analysis methods applicable to radiation, …

In these nuclear facilities, proper management of radioactive materials is required. Then, A -ray spectrometer with four segmentations using small volume CeBr scintillators with a dimension of was developed. The four scintillators were coupled to a multi-anode photomultiplier tube specific to intense radiation fields. We performed the -ray exposure study under Cs and Co radiation fields. Under the Cs radiation field, the relative energy resolution at 1375 mSv/h was the relative energy resolution at 1375 mSv/h was 9.20.05%, 8.00.08%, 8.00.03%, and 9.00.04% for the four channels, respectively.

During the decommissioning, radioactive materials have to be retrieved under proper management. In this study, a small cubic CeBr spectrometer with dimensions of 5 mm 5 mm 5 mm was manufactured to perform -ray spectroscopy under intense -ray fields. Furthermore, thanks to a fast digital process unit and a customized photomultiplier, the device could perform -ray spectroscopy at dose rates of over 1 Sv/h. The energy resolution (FWHM) at 662 keV ranged from 4.4% at 22 mSv/h to 5.2% at 1407 mSv/h for a Cs radiation field. Correspondingly, at 1333 keV, it ranged from 3.1% at 26 mSv/h to 4.2% at 2221 mSv/h for a Co radiation field, which suggested to realize -ray assessment of Cs, Cs, Co, and Eu at dose rates of over 1 Sv/h.

The Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science (CLADS), Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), had been conducting the Nuclear Energy Science & Technology and Human Resource Development Project (hereafter referred to "the Project") in FY2019. In addition, the development and combination of ETCC-based quantitative radioactivity distribution analysis methods will lead to innovative advances in the six key issues to be solved for the decommissioning of the 1F. This system will enable us to quantitatively visualize the three-dimensional radiation distribution and its origin.

Electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC) has been developed originally for nuclear gamma-ray astronomy, and also applied to medical use as a technology that greatly improves the resolution of conventional Compton camera by measuring three-dimensional tracking of electrons using a gaseous 3-dimensional position detector (so called Time Projection Chamber) in the first stage. In the present study, based on the ETCC that has been developed for medical use, we produce a prototype of light weight ETCC with the emphasis on the operability at the site, and evaluate its practicability by field tests.

A high-radiation resistant optical fiber has been developed in order to investigate the interiors of the reactor pressure vessels and the primary containment vessels at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The tentative dose rate in the reactor pressure vessels is assumed to be up to 1 kGy/h. We developed a radiation resistant optical fiber consisting of a 1000 ppm hydroxyl doped pure silica core and 4 % fluorine doped pure silica cladding. We attempted to apply the optical fiber to remote imaging technique by means of fiberscope. The number of core image fibers was increased from 2000 to 22000 for practical use. The transmissive rate of infrared images was not affected after irradiation of 1 MGy. No change in the spatial resolution of the view scope by means of image fiber was noted between pre- and post-irradiation. We confirmed the applicability of the probing system, which consists of a view scope using radiation-resistant optical fibers.

This paper (presentation) reports on the design study for seeking compactness of moderator (and reflector) structure for the Delayed Gamma-ray Spectroscopy Non Destructive Assay system to be applied for verification of fissile isotopic (Pu-239, Pu-241 and U-235) composition ratio in High Radioactive Nuclear Material sample such as dissolved solution of reprocessing facility. We first investigated advantages and disadvantages of using different compact neutron sources as DT and DD neutron generators. This led us to the conclusion of using DD sources to achieve a compact (and practical) NDA system. Based on MCNP simulations, with the use of a DD neutron generator, a preliminary optimization study was performed and will be shown here.

The entry distribution method, which can determine the excitation energy at which fission starts to dominate the decay process, was applied to No. The fission barrier of No was found to be 6.6 MeV at zero spin, indicating that the No is strongly stabilized by the nuclear shell effects.

The development of Delayed Gamma-ray Spectroscopy (DGS) for analyzing the composition ratio of fissile nuclides (Pu, Pu, U) focused on the Delayed Gamma-ray having energy over 3 MeV has been performed for the development of active neutron non-destructive assay techniques. In PCDF, measurement tests of Delayed Gamma-ray using Pu solution and MOX powder samples to prove the DGS technique is planned to be performed in following 4 stages. (1) Measurements for Delayed Gamma-ray originated from spontaneous fission nuclide (Passive), (2) Measurements for the Delayed Gamma-ray with fast neutron (Active), (3) DGSI (DGS combined with self-interrogation) measurements (Passive), (4) Measurements for the Delayed Gamma-ray with thermal neutron (Active) In this paper, the plan of measurement tests for nuclear material samples with use of DGS is presented.
